浦島太郎
從小就覺得自己是小貓, 跟在媽媽旁邊磨磨蹭
蹭, 咪咪喵喵. 十分理直氣壯. 慈愛的母親也總是

媽媽常說故事, "浦島太郎" --- 年幼的我似乎身在童話中炫麗的龍宮, 不勝豔羨地對 媽媽說, " 龜啊! 你家真漂亮!" 這童年往事至今仍令我倆回味無窮.
這次爸媽搬家後, 我還沒有機會到新家住過呢. 這回想必可以像浦島太郎一樣的在乙姬的家痛快的玩了.

attacked by ants
I have such a hard time to track down Max each night in the backyard.
He is so small. When he hides under the dry leaves, we just can't find him! Until couple weeks ago, I decide to put leash on him to keep track of his where about. ( see photo )
But he still out-smart me, he rubs his belly on the grass and escape. I give up and allow him to sleep outdoor at night. Thinking, " hey, if I can't find you, maybe the bad guys won't find you either" But one day Kalven found Max's injured leg was attacked by ants, the poor thing's leg is swollen and red. :( Poor Max shuts his eye ( and he only has one good eye ) due to the pain. He goes through so much.
Rinse the ants off his body. We decides to keep him indoor for a while. He still gets to soak in the tub daily and play in his box. Hope he gets stronger soon.

Sent mouse to Siberia 流放西伯利亞的滑鼠
My (sort of new) wireless mouse is acting up these couple days.
It has brand-new battery; so it is not hungry. The courser is at the right spot and the right click works fine. That tells me the optic detection is fine. Just the more frequently used left bottom ignore my request. Oh, yah. I reset the bottom on the blue tooth stick too.
Did a bit of research on the web. Some gigs post instruction on reconfigure the driver and other procedures way too complicated for me. So I give up and ask Kavlen for his advise. Even he told me the mouse is dead.
Before dumping the mouse, I recall the old trick I learned from my working days in electronic component industry. Since the circuit board is layered, the electronic connection might lost contact from heat generated on the surrounding board. It might be connected again by freeze it to create the contact again. I actually revived my old digital camera too.
So I send the injured mouse to Siberia, my freezer. Yes, it works again!

東坡居士的才華一向為中國文人所仰慕崇拜. 但是他瀟灑達觀 、心不隨境轉的人生哲學才真是令我五體投地。在宗教的認同上，他是個佛教徒，他同意"剎那" "無常"的觀念; ( 像【水調歌頭】中的 "月有陰晴圓缺" ) 但是他卻不認同人生是苦海的說法. 他是隨遇而安, 自在悠然的. ( "同行皆狼狽，余獨不覺" )
他的灑脫自在建立在"無我"上. 不為外物功名所牽絆, 只求盡力而為, 問心無愧. 從" 回首向來蕭瑟處，歸去，也無風雨也無晴" 中是一個"空"字, 但此詞的境界沒有惆悵, 而是讓讀者從執著中出離.

Blackie amd opossum 7/4/09
Blackie surprises us today by visiting us in the morning. We haven't see him for a while since his eye injury. ( His eye looks better today! I think TienTien is helping him from up there! ) Might be animal's instinct, he sneaks in when it is dark outside. During the daytime, there are many competitors for his food. Little sparrows and big loud ravens stop by to pick at his food bowl. I was amazed to witness birds to eat dry cat food; but realized later that cat food is 80% corn meal anyway. Of course they will found it appealing! Therefore, lots of time, I put out the food after dinner. Hoping Blackie will get more to eat.
Then there is another problem. Opossum! The other night I heard noise outside my window. Thinking it was Blackie, I tiptoed to the window. Then I saw a big ugly opossum chewing Blackie's food as if I set it just for it. Not only the opossum stays put while it sees my face at the window. It didn't move even I shine the flashlight at its face! Kalven and I got upset at the moment and walk out the door to chase it off. It finally runs off the back.
We walked back to the kitchen. Kalven told me, " Maybe we shouldn't bother the opossum. It is a life too. We shouldn't discriminate base on how the animal looks. " He is so right. We love cats; because of we adore TienTien. However, the opossum has no way to choose what form it was born into. Just because its rat-like face, we want to repeal them whenever we see one.
Is that right? Will it be right for me to dislike a person because he or she is not good looking or have some forms of physical handicap? What makes it different between opossum and stray cat?
As a matter of fact, opossum is known for its superiority on caring for its youth. The baby opossums usually ride on mom's back to be moved from one place to the other. This ugly opossum could have a family somewhere waiting for it to return home.
Now I start to feel more and more about the Buddhism teaching of " being compassionate to all living creatures ". All living creatures have feelings. Carry the compassion toward all.
So we leave out food every day. No matter who eats the food. We feel we share with other creatures; and it bring happiness to us.

Getting to know the new home 7/2/09 新生訓練
I brought his Mobile Home to the west side of the bushes to let the sun in. He finally walked out hesitantly then quickly hide under the bushes next to it. I move the water basin next him and take him for a dip. He slowly sticks his head out and start to drink water. For couple big sips. Then he shoots out yellow urine to the water three times! (Different from the big brother's white stuff. ) He looks perk-up even still decides to hide under the shade. So I gather some dandelion leaves to put in front of him. He eats couple bits! In order to be on the good side of Timmy, I gave him a big piece of iceberg lettuce with Calcium powder. Big brother is happy.

new kid in town 6/30/09 新來的, 請多指教
I rescued/ adopted a small tortoise Monday night from my friend's church. This poor little guy was injured in a pond by vicious snapping turtle ( turtle with alligator sharp teeth ) and lost his right hind leg. Also his left eye is not able to see either. He was confined in a small metal cage. So I volunteer to take him home to live in my back yard. I feel like Urashima Taro (浦島太郎).在朋友的教堂看到一個鏽跡斑駁的小鐵籠, 一碟水、兩顆草苺, 半塊空心樹幹. 不禁好奇地看看躲起來的是誰? 大概是小兔子吧? 想不到是隻小烏龜!
不忍看它被關著, 多事地建議讓小傢伙出來走走. 朋友才告訴我, 它的右後腳和左眼都被鱷龜咬傷了, 它不太能保護自己. 一把它放在草地上, 小傢伙驚慌失措, 偏著頭奮力以三隻腳往前爬 (右眼要觀察兩邊動靜), 只得拉長了脖子… 好可愛的小勇士. 朋友徵求牧師同意後讓我帶它回家.
Kalven也好高興我們能給它一自由安全的家. 願眾生” 無有眾苦, 但受諸樂” (緣起: 佛說阿彌陀經). 爸爸幫它取了名字, 大哥叫Timmy, 在2000到我們家, 已往生的小烏龜是Tomi (日本名字, 阿嬤賜名: 男孩兒是” 富”, 女孩兒是” 富子” à 夏目漱石的” 我是貓” 中也有個嬌生慣養的金田富子), 他將是 Max!

Blackie's eye 6/4/09
I am worried about Blackie. One of his eyes bothers him base on what I can see. Not sure did he get into a fight? Or just some sort of infection?
He stood by the kitchen door today looking at me. Maybe he is sending his condolence for TienTien too.
We rush out and put the food at the usual spot. He came by and ate it quickly.
Kefir and homemade yogurt 6/2/09
Norma, a friend, gave a batch of kefir grain back in April. It is live culture makes milk turning into kefir ( close relative of yogurt ). Because it contains different pro biotic bacteria, it gives a slight ferment aroma different from yogurt. I like the fact it is freshly cultivate in my kitchen and a LOT cheaper than buying it from Trader Joe.
Then I found out from another friend, Divya, who makes her yogurt with lukewarm milk and plain yogurt. I don't know why people buy "yogurt machine"? This is easy enough even for someone as lazy as me.

Kalven went to work for the modified schedule on Sunday afternoon to support Singapore schedule. I looked at TienTien's pictures on my album and missed her terribly.
If physical body is just a container for the soul, will TienTien comes back with a different "box" to check on us? We used to enjoy look at squirrels in our backyard. Will she comes back as a furry little guy holding a nut in her hands?
Went out to walk in the afternoon breeze, hoping it will blow away my sorrow. Before I know it, a squirrel runs across the cement sidewalk to get up to the tree. Stare at me as if it knows me forever. Is that you, TienTien?

Oatmeal Cookies
Material:
3/4 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional )
1 1/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 1/2 cup quick-oatmeal, not cooked
Stir-In ideas, total 2 cups maximum
1 cup chopped walnut
1 cup raisin ( or cranberry )
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup white sesame seeds (for the oriental touch )
1 cup chopped chocolate candies like Butterfinger, Snicker, etc.
Procedure:
Preheat the oven to be 350F.
Cream together butter, sugar, and brown sugar. Add eggs and vanilla to mix well.
Add flour, baking powder, baking soda to the cream mixture. Stir in oatmeal.
Fold in walnut, raisin, and/or other stir-in items.
Scoop out the cookie dough to make 1-inch (diameter) ball. Drop on cookie sheets to bake for 12 - 15 min.
Yield: 3 dozen
ShiLai Temple 5/23/09
Srihari family come over our place to have lunch with us. Since I am really not much a chef, we take them to Chinese restaurant in Rowland Heights. Divya impressed me with her beautiful hand-painted bindi. Even little Princess Ishanvi has a bindi too!
After the lunch we went to ShiLai Temple, Ishanvi is like a fish in the water. She smiles at the Buddhist statues and happily roams in the temple's courtyard. ( By the way, "Ishanvi" is the Hindu Goddess of Knowledge. I better hold her in my arms more often to get smarter. Connection is everything. ) It is a beautiful day.
Every visitors want to check out Timmy the HHT. He politely greets Srihari family. Graze on the rose petals which makes Ishanvi giggles. Never seen a rock moves and eat flowers!
Divya also kindly brought me delicious homemade Indian food. Carrot Halwa, batter for Dosa ( fresh ground rice and chick pea with chopped vegetable batter ), and spicy sprouted lentils. I am in heaven.
These Indian delicacy are consumed rapidly; but the warmth of friendship lingers on.

Timmy and the tale of three families
Timmy is a long term resident of Hacienda Heights. He is also known as Hacienda Holy Tortoise, short for HHT. We move here at the end of 1996, and he lived in the house behind us. The first owner, Dale, got him from Mojave desert. We used to look at him in admiration when we water the rose bushes. He usually roams around the yard and snacking on lettuce or strawberries. Never saw a desert tortoise, he amazed us.
When Dale and his wife decided to move, he asked us if we like to adopt Timmy. We are gladly accept his request. However, the buyer, Mr. & Mrs. Tung, want to keep Timmy as well. Knowing Dale's intention is to have Timmy lives in an environment he is used to, we can only have Timmy be w
ith the Tung's.
ith the Tung's. Couple years past, we start enjoy watching him over the fence. Mrs. Tung is actually a nice neighbor to have who also had an outdoor cat, Mimi. ( It's a girly name for a boy. Don't you think? ) She ends up moving as well and decides to give Timmy to us!
We are happy to welcome him to our home at last. Now he is one of the main tourist attraction of our humble home. Besides his winter hibernation indoor, he lives in his palace in our back yard by himself. Still a bachelor; since a lady tortoise is hard to come by.

It is a difficult decision; we finally decide to say goodbye to our lovely daughter TienTien last Sunday, 5/24.
萬般不捨, 終於還是要和我們的愛女甜甜道別. 她在 5/24 往生了.
Her health deteriorates rapidly since she was hospitalized. Watching her fade away for this half year is very hard on us. Before we left, she suddenly realized something big is happening and cried with her little weak voice. We are all in tears but we can't have her suffer any longer just for our emotional needs.
她的健康在住院後每況愈下, 看著她日漸憔悴真令人心如刀割. 要到獸醫那兒的時候, 小東西驚覺到大事不妙, 用盡了全力微弱地喵了一聲; 我們淚如雨下但還是不能讓她再受這樣的苦. 只因為我們不能割捨對女兒的牽掛.
She was restless in my arms at the vet's office. Amazingly, she rest on Kalven's shoulder after he comforted her with his loving words. TienTien had to know daddy and mommy would be OK.
甜甜在我的臂彎裏掙扎, 但聽了她爸爸的哄勸, 寶寶乖乖地靠在他肩膀上. 她一定要爸媽都答應她可以走了.
She looked beautiful and calm as she always did at the vet's table. ( I witnessed other animals with terrified look on their faces at the time of departure ) She is an angel in fur coat. These wonderful 12 years will be ours to treasure and appreciate.
在獸醫的檯子上, 甜甜看來一如生前的文靜美麗 . (我見過其它往生的動物表情驚恐) 她是穿上了貓皮的小天使. 她給了我們美好的十二年, 讓我們珍惜感念.
Farewell, TienTien. Knowing you are not suffering anymore is the only thing can ease our pain. Thank you for share these precious 12 years with us. We love you forever.

Divya's kitchen 5/9/09
We were invited to Srihari's house to have authentic Indian food prepared by his beautiful wife, Divya. Not only we indulged the feast and company, they also share many interesting facts about Indian culture. To name a few, do you know:
- Wife and kids pick up the husband's first name as their last name. --- For example, if Mary Doe married to John Smith, she will become Mary John. Their kid, Chris, will become Chris John. This new trend is intended to break up the classification been implied by last name. News to me.
- An average Indian wedding has 1000 guests and last about a week. --- It makes my 86 people wedding looks like a picnic in the park. I thought it was a big task already.
Their lovely daughter, Ishanvi, is the pride and joy of them. She is a curious little girl who wants to be entertained all the time. Kalven and I have lots of fun at this gathering.

祈福法會
甜甜一向都陪爸爸念經打坐, 但因為這一陣子玉體欠安, 這功課就有些荒廢了.
這個禮拜她的情形好轉了, 開始自己乖乖吃飯, 前一陣子我們很傷腦筋, 不知道為什麼她不想吃? 而且瘦了25%的體重. ( 12 lb 到8.5 lb! ) 獸醫也沒辦法. 試了開胃的藥, 她當然不肯吃啦. ( 甜甜公主說: " 我才沒那麼笨!" )
獸醫要我用 pill popper 把藥"射"進她嘴裡 (我光看獸醫這麼做就頭皮發麻), "射"了三次, 她馬上把藥從嘴裡弄出來, 一臉驚恐無辜的可憐樣。無可奈何之下, 上網找是否有方法讓貓咪吃藥, 有人建議把藥磨成粉,再用沙拉油當介質抹在貓咪的前腳, 因為貓愛乾淨, 他們會馬上舐去這些東西.
有效嗎? 是有效! 可是因為藥苦, 她開始哭叫並且流口水. (我想這是動物的生理反應, 用口水來稀釋苦味)躲在桌子底下, 我也蹲下來流眼淚, 覺得很對不起她, 好捨不得. 不禁黯然想到小時侯體弱多病的我, 真不知讓爸媽花了多少心血. "養兒方知父母恩"這句話真是沒錯.
一整天她都躲在桌子底下, 等著Kalven下班才出來. 我想她大概沒吃進多少藥, 口水把藥都流掉了.就 讓她休息一下子, 別再這麼硬灌她了. 沒想到她也真的開始好轉, 真是謝天謝地.
所以這禮拜的法會甜甜終於能一起參加了! 她們父女兩人謹祝阿公阿嬤身体健康!

Granola Recipe
Went to Costco and fall in love with its Granola. However, hoping to make it to be less sugary and lighter. Here is a basic recipe works well for me:
Material:
- Old Fashion Oatmeal ( don't sub with Quick Cook ) 2 cups
- Canola Oil / Olive Oil 1/4 cup --- Or mix peanut butter with oil to make 1/4 cup
- Honey 1/4 cup
- Vanilla Extract 1 Tablespoon
- Brown Sugar 2 Tablespoon
- Optional Addition - Walnut, Almond ( total 1 cup )
Mix everything together well. Bake on non-stick baking sheet for at 300F for 30 minutes.
Stir every 15 minutes.
Turn off the oven and let it stand 10 min.
Remove from the oven to cool off. Store in container. Last for about 2 - 3 weeks without refrigeration.

洒肉朋友/食客 - Friends to hang out
Since TienTiend doesn't always finish her food and I hate to waste these delicious cat food. I start to put her leftover can food outside to see if any wild cats will have them. For sure, now we have two regular visitors to drop by daily. One of them is all black ( somehow I think it's a he ), I name the cat "Blackie". The other one is tortoise patterned, I name that one " Spotty".
甜甜通常會剩下一些食物, 實在很不想糟蹋這些美味的貓食. 所以開始把她的剩菜放在後院, 也許會有流浪貓來光顧? 真的引來兩個食客 ( 沒有雞鳴貓盜一說吧? ). 有一隻壯漢( 猜的), 全黑的, 自然被叫阿黑. 另一隻胖嘟嘟的小姐穿件雜色/龜紋大衣, 就叫阿花吧.

They seem to love TienTien's leftover. No kidding. They are gourmet cat foods like Fancy Feast or MeowMix Market Select. They cost even more than baby food. This is insane! Anyway, sometimes TienTien eats her dry food and no left over can food to give out but I do want to treat these two friends she has. So I bought a bag of dry food just for them; they love it! Plus I add a bowl of clean water for them too. They are happy campers now.
They seem to love TienTien's leftover. No kidding. They are gourmet cat foods like Fancy Feast or MeowMix Market Select. They cost even more than baby food. This is insane! 他們一點都不介意吃甜甜的剩菜, 吃得很香呢! 開玩笑, 甜甜公主吃的都是特製品上等貨; 這些賣貓食的奸商把价錢哄抬得比嬰兒食品還貴! 可惡. 不過有時候她用的是貓餅乾, 沒有剩下來的罐頭食品要處理, 還是不忍讓已經結了緣的貓兒挨餓, 乾脆買一包請客吧. 他們吃得酒足飯飽的. 還奉上一碗水給他們潤喉. 看來跟兩位食客的緣是結下了.
Sharing makes me happy. I can't care of all the homeless cats but I feel better to provide a little for these two. Less two cats suffer from hunger.

TienTien doesn't want her boring dry food. Cooked some anchovey with rice for her. Maybe she will like it? Typical Taiwanese cat diet.

玉體欠安 not feeling well
TienTien was not like herself since beginning 2008. She eats less, drinks lots of water, urinates a lot too and lost weight! Most of us human would be happy about that, but it is not a good thing for pets. I took her to the doctor to have blood work done to see if it is diabetes. Nope. The January blood work shows she is OK.
November 2008, she lost more weight and seemed to suffer from Urinary Tract Infecton.

New Year 2009 新年-三隻小豬
As usual, Jennifer and Aleck host the New Year count down party at their lovely house in Huntington Beach. The delicious dishes exceed the headcount once again. Also, Jennifer has impressed us with her sushi, spring roll, and many other dishes are pretty and yummy.

Everybody loves TienTien 萬人迷甜甜
TienTien was hospitalized for three days to receive intensive care from Dr. Kumar. She has to get IV pumped into her body to detoxify her kidneys. Because of that, the technician has to shave one of her front leg! She is waiting for grandma to knit a stocking for her.
She is so good natured. Even the technicians in vet's office adore her. One day I left her in the vet's office and picked her up later... Guess what? She had a funny perfum scent on her. It smells just like the technician's perfum. Hmm, looks like she kissed TienTien while I was away!
